KICKASS WOMEN IN HISTORY : [1/5] BOUDICA
Boudica was queen of the fierce Iceni during the early Roman occupation of Britain. It is because of her truly breathtaking assault against the Roman empire that makes her one of the greatest women in history. When the Romans invaded Britain they offered her husband, Prasutagus a deal, he could reign as king in the name of the empire. This relationship broke down when he died and the Romans tried to seize his lands. Boudica was flogged and her daughters raped, which resulted in her leading an uprising against them. She managed to rally thousands of men from various tribes in a revolt. In fact, her uprising shook the Roman empire so much, Nero almost ordered a withdrawal from Britain. Boudica led her army to victory on three occasions, when they ransacked and destroyed Colchester, London and St. Albans. But, despite overwhelming numbers, the Britons lost the crucial Battle of Watling Street to the Romans. Boudica and her army were defeated. Instead of allowing herself to be captured it is said that she killed herself with poison. A truly inspirational woman.
